With that said, it doesn’t mean I don’t hate the idea that it could be 2022 before Elder Scrolls 6 is released if a game of that size isn’t even in development at this point and stuck behind two also-huge projects. This is a new era of gaming, for better or worse, and companies are going to work to protect their most valuable revenue streams, in this case, a successful MMO and a game that can be re-released with minimal effort infinitely. This is not unique to The Elder Scrolls, as we are seeing Rockstar essentially do the same thing now that GTA Online has morphed into a hugely profitable, microtransaction-powered MMO, killing all hope for story DLC and lessening the importance of a timely release for GTA 6. It may be irritating from a fan perspective, but it’s easy to see it through Bethesda’s eyes, particularly when it comes to TESO slowly morphing into a golden goose that would be directly strangled by ES6 if that game was released alongside it.
It makes the most sense to let current interest in Skyrim and TESO fully wane over time rather than dropping ES6 on top of both of them, killing the good thing they have going. Again, Skyrim was such a hit that it’s one of the only games that can get away with this, but as soon as Elder Scrolls 6 shows up, the party is over.

We just saw a Skyrim remaster arrive for new-gen consoles last year, now the game is coming to Switch and VR, and Bethesda is developing a paid mods store for the game going forward. A running joke at this E3 is that by the end of the show, we’ll be getting Skyrim ports for graphing calculators, given how the game keeps being re-released in new ways on new platforms.
The same thing goes for Skyrim, albeit perhaps to a lesser extent. Everyone would flock to that game and abandon The Elder Scrolls Online en masse, if not permanently, than at least temporarily (but probably permanently). It’s grown by leaps and bounds into an incredibly healthy product for Bethesda, one that provides them with ongoing revenue streams above and beyond selling box copies or DLC packs.īut you can guess what would happen if Elder Scrolls 6 ended up being released in a year or two. Though The Elder Scrolls Online is often mocked by fans as a game “no one wanted,” after a lot of patches and content updates, it has been thriving in an age where most MMOs don’t.
